Okay so this post is not necessarily wedding related but I thought it was worth a few minutes of my time. For the last 10 years every February I travel with my family and friends to somewhere warm and tropical to relieve the mid-winter blues, also my birthday happens to fall around this time of year so it’s an easy excuse to celebrate that as well. This year for the first time in a decade I will not be traveling at all this winter and it’s made me sit back and really reflect on why I go. When it first started it was just an excuse to escape the snow and run off to Florida for some fun in the sun but as the years past and the trips grew larger and longer and our destination spots varied I realized that this was an important time of year to bond and catch up with my family. Granted we work together and so we see each other daily but this is was our time to put aside the stress and pressure of running a family business and to be mother, sister, wife and daughter as opposed to boss and employees. These trips have given me the opportunity to reconnect with the ones I love the most in a stress free environment where we can be ourselves. It allows us to relax and remember why we decided to run a family business in the first place and how much we truly enjoy each others company. This year my husband and I were not able to make it because we purchased our first home and closed in December, with the amount required to put down on our house and the holidays being just around the corner we had to pass on our yearly vacation. My sister took her trip in January, mom left last week and Kelly flew out today, sitting in my quiet office this morning watching the blizzard outside my window I realized it’s not the warm weather and beautiful beaches I miss but the rare opportunity to spend uninterrupted time with my favorite people enjoying their company… have a great time on your trips family!!!! I love and miss you!!!!!
O.k. While I don’t usually use my blog as a way to shamelessly promote Farina’s, I do want to take a minute and brag about our new website. I LOVE IT!!! This last week I took a “business trip” to Chicago to work with Ashley on our new website (by the way she is phenomenally talented). 14 hours and 9 adult beverages later we had finally put together something we both were proud of. I have no background in web design but Ash is a miracle worker and by putting our heads together I think we came up with something amazing!!!!! If you get a chance to check out our handy work visit www.farinasbanquet.com and take a tour. I have learned the websites are a constant work in progress so constructive critism is welcome.
Thanks again Ashley!!!!!!!
P.S. Did I also mention she’s a fabulous photographer!!
O.k. so you have spent all this money on your dress (which looks amazing). You’ve booked a gorgeous space for the reception, you have kick- a*! shoes, he looks fabulous in his tux and you ask your girlfriend to do your hair and makeup! WHAT!!!! ladies this is a major no-no…. unless your girlfriend is a licensed cosmetologist with a chair at a reputable salon or like my girlfriend Nicole… licensed but works from home, then what are you thinking!!!!!!!!!! You just spent literally thousands of dollars on this one day and you won’t kick in the extra loot to ensure that you look amazing? crazy!
Your best girl that does your hair before you head out for a Friday night is not the person who should be handling your locks before your big day. Find a professional who specializes in nothing but hair and make a minimum of 2 appointments. The first is a run through of your big day (make sure to take pictures) and the 2nd is for the morning of your event. Don’t stop there, your regular make-up is not going to cut it for your wedding neither is your best friends stab at a “smoky eye”. Go and see a professional make-up artist to ensure you look as amazing as possible, throw down the extra money and get airbrushed so that way you look as good at 1am as you did at 10am. Your hair and make-up for your wedding day is nothing to mess with, you have to look at these pictures for the rest of your life do you really want to look back and regret you didn’t trust it to a pro? You have already scrimped and saved to make everything else amazing do yourself a favor and set aside a few extra bucks to make sure you look and feel smokin on your wedding day.
Saturday evening here at Farina’s we had the pleasure of hosting a fundraiser to raise money to help find a cure for breast cancer. Mike Hull used to be an employee here at Farina’s years ago (I am pretty sure he predates me!!) Last year he lost his mother to breast cancer and he has been fundraising for a cure ever since. We had the privilege of helping him host the Ha Ha’s for Ta Ta’s Fighting Cancer with Comedy night here on Saturday, when he first contacted us to see if we would be interested in helping it was a no-brainer. My cousin had just had a recent battle with breast cancer and I knew first hand how hard a fight like that could be. The event went great, the comedians were hilarious and I believe they raised quite a bit of money! To get involved check out http://makingstrides.acsevents.org/site/PageServer?pagename=MSABC_FY13_FindAnEvent and find out how you can make a difference in fighting breast cancer.
Me, Kelly and my cousin Amy. Amy’s been Cancer free for almost 4 months!!!!!!!
Weddings basics 101…. here’s a quick tip to help your planning go a little smoother. This may sound simple but get organized!!!! You do not need a 20 pound bridal binder, however get a small notebook or folder to keep your most important stuff organized in. I am not speaking of color swatches and photos of your favorite flowers, I am speaking of the legal BINDING contracts you sign when you recruit your vendors. Make sure you keep all the copies of the documents that you sign when you agree to use their services, it’s important to know deadlines for payments and dates for when final decisions need to be made. Make sure you read these carefully and always have a copy of it with you when you meet with your vendor. Remember unnecessary surprises can put a damper on your big day! Know where your money is going and make sure you always get all contracts in writing!!!
Blogging! Ok here it goes!!!! After much thought and debate the name suddenly popped into my head Brooke@Farinas… of course its perfect because I always seem to be @Farinas!!!! Let me start by saying, I am not a writer… never have been, so please be kind when reading my blog because I am sure mistakes and errors in grammar will be abound. The decision to do a blog came after my own wedding back in June. Going thru the process myself has given me a whole new perspective on my clients and what they go thru while planning their own weddings. I thought being a planner for a living would make it easy but there is a whole world of problems and issues I had no idea about. My hope with my blog is t o give realistic suggestions and ideas (as well as opinions) on how to navigate the murky waters of throwing a large-scale event. Along the way I would like to throw in Tips, suggestions and ideas as well as a few funny stories! If you are looking for David Tutera style magic or Bridezillas drama, this blog is not for you but if honest advice, real life experience and some good old-fashioned humor is what you need then feel free to follow along!!!
