Could you pack me in your luggage?

Okay so this post is not necessarily wedding related but I thought it was worth a few minutes of my time. For the last 10 years every February I travel with my family and friends to somewhere warm and tropical to relieve the mid-winter blues, also my birthday happens to fall around this time of year so it’s an easy excuse to celebrate that as well. This year for the first time in a decade I will not be traveling at all this winter and it’s made me sit back and really reflect on why I go. When it first started it was just an excuse to escape the snow and run off to Florida for some fun in the sun but as the years past and the trips grew larger and longer and our destination spots varied I realized that this was an important time of year to bond and catch up with my family. Granted we work together and so we see each other daily but this is was our time to put aside the stress and pressure of running a family business and to be mother, sister, wife and daughter as opposed to boss and employees. These trips have given me the opportunity to reconnect with the ones I love the most in a stress free environment where we can be ourselves. It allows us to relax and remember why we decided to run a family business in the first place and how much we truly enjoy each others company. This year my husband and I were not able to make it because we purchased our first home and closed in December, with the amount required to put down on our house and the holidays being just around the corner we had to pass on our yearly vacation. My sister took her trip in January, mom left last week and Kelly flew out today, sitting in my quiet office this morning watching the blizzard outside my window I realized it’s not the warm weather and beautiful beaches I miss but the rare opportunity to spend uninterrupted time with my favorite people enjoying their company… have a great time on your trips family!!!! I love and miss you!!!!!

Just because he can.

My husband and I agree on most stuff, we have similar hobbies and passions and views on the world however when it comes to decorating our home we couldn’t be more different. How can a man who agrees with me on what sports teams to cheer for and which holidays are most important not share my vision for how our home should look. He likes leather and glass and shiny steel… I like light woods and rich colors and neutral tones. We literally could not be more different in how we decorate. His idea of how our living room should look includes Sports memorabilia and his fantasy football trophy (think man-cave) my idea of how our living room should look is family photos, comfy couches and lots of pillows and throw blankets! We are currently in the process of renovating the main living space in our house (dining room, living room, hallways). You would think the most challenging part would be living with the dust and debris that comes with construction but I can honestly say settling on paint and flooring choices has been more difficult. He wanted shiny cherry wood floors, I wanted super light natural one’s. He likes white for the walls and taupe is more my style. Countless paint samples later he finally looks at me and says honestly I could care less do whatever you want you’re the one who cleans it! Grrrr! We could have saved 2 precious weeks of our time if I had that information earlier! The crazy thing was he wasn’t even snotty or sarcastic he really does think that since I spend the most time there I should get to choose, this is awesome by the way but now I am thinking we’re you just screwin with me… is that one of those “how to annoy your wife things”? I think he purposefully dragged it out just because he can.
So finally after all the nonsense my new gorgeous light natural wood floors go in on Monday!!!! And they will match my taupe walls perfectly. I am like a kid at Christmas I can’t wait, and as I am spending last night removing the last of the furniture and touching up the paint he turns to me with a smile and says…. I changed my mind! I like cherry better!

Chuckling at the thought of kicking his ass,

Shameless Self Promotion

O.k. While I don’t usually use my blog as a way to shamelessly promote Farina’s, I do want to take a minute and brag about our new website. I LOVE IT!!!  This last week I took a “business trip” to Chicago to work with Ashley on our new website (by the way she is phenomenally talented). 14 hours and 9 adult beverages later we had finally put together something we both were proud of. I have no background in web design but Ash is a miracle worker and by putting our heads together I think we came up with something amazing!!!!!  If you get a chance to check out our handy work visit and take a tour. I have learned the websites are a constant work in progress so constructive critism is welcome.

Thanks again Ashley!!!!!!!

P.S. Did I also mention she’s a fabulous photographer!!

Ah a new year! How I love the months of January thru March… Such a busy time of year for me! Typically our phone starts ringing non-stop on the 2nd of January and keeps on until the end of March. That means that we aren’t super busy in the ballrooms but crazy hectic in our office. I love being really busy at work nothing is worse than sitting at work twiddling your thumbs and wondering when 5 o’ clock is going to come.
I’m not sure if all halls are like us but typically we are busy because of the different booking specials we offer which brings around to my blog topic for today!
Don’t wait to book if you haven;t decided about a hall for your event for this year take advantage of the deals that you can get by booking January thur March. Most places typically want to encourage same year bookings so if you are planning something special for this year now is a good time to do the research and consider where you will be holding your event. Take advantage of the freebies that you can get when you put a deposit down during winter months. Think of this time of year like a fire sale for halls and venues and take advantage of the specials that they have to offer.
Good luck in your shopping and have fun planning whatever might be on your calendar for 2013!

Christmas Weddings

The Pro’s and Con’s of a Christmas wedding.

Pro- Decorations are fairly cheap because things are already naturally decorated towards the Holidays.

Con- Your husband will forever mesh together your Christmas and Anniversary presents.

Pro- Picking a theme is easy!

Con- It’s a problem if you dislike Red/Green and Silver

Pro- Music selection is easy

Con- People are not as understanding as you think about no presents because you have to pay for a wedding! (ie.. your sister will be mad she didn’t get those earings but had to pay for a dress)

Pro- People are already in town for the holidays.

Con- A white Christmas does not make a happy bride (snow duh!)

Pro- cute muffs and shawls are adorable….

Con- Heavy winter boots and brown slush on your train are not.

Pro- Halls usually have multiple events so you get freebies like valet and coat check no charge….

Con- having the Company Christmas party next to your reception cha- cha slide thru your room. It’s not cute!

Pro-Unless you have a good sense of humor in which case it’s definitely memorable!

Con- straying from the holiday theme makes you look lame.

Pro- Ideas for favors are easy… ornaments, christmas cookies ect…

Con- no one wants more ornaments or Christmas cookies!!!

I get that I just spent half a page busting on the thought of a Christmas wedding but the truth is if I had my way my wedding would be 2 weeks from now and I would be fa- la- la -la -laing my way down the aisle! My hubby and my parents vetoed me on a Christmas wedding because of most of the Con’s above but if you are considering one “who cares!” Its your day do it when you like!.

Have a holly jolly time planning

If you dare!!!!

Who says a wedding dress has to be white? Below are my top 5 picks for black wedding dresses! I thought this would be fitting since today is Halloween!!!!  I have done a Halloween themed wedding and I wholeheartedly believe that it can be accomplished without being cheesy, gutsy yes! cheesy? not necessarily. Ha Ha’s for Ta Ta’s

Saturday evening here at Farina’s we had the pleasure of hosting a fundraiser to raise money to help find a cure for breast cancer. Mike Hull used to be an employee here at Farina’s years ago (I am pretty sure he predates me!!) Last year he lost his mother to breast cancer and he has been fundraising for a cure ever since. We had the privilege of helping him host the Ha Ha’s for Ta Ta’s Fighting Cancer with Comedy night here on Saturday, when he first contacted us to see if we would be interested in helping it was a no-brainer. My cousin had just had a recent battle with breast cancer and I knew first hand how hard  a fight like that could be. The event went great, the comedians were hilarious and I believe they raised quite a bit of money!  To get involved check out  and find out how you can make a difference in fighting breast cancer.

Get involved!

Me, Kelly and my cousin Amy.
Amy’s been Cancer free for almost 4 months!!!!!!!

A thank you to Carmen!

A favorite client came into my office this morning with the finished photos from her daughter’s wedding that we did back in July, I have been looking forward to seeing these because they were an adorable couple who are very photogenic and I am getting ready to do my next’s years ad campaign. She had her computer with all the photos as well as actual prints and what she called her “brag book”, I was intrigued! The book was a 10×10 hardcover layout of her favorite pictures from her daughter’s wedding and it was adorable! It had all kinds of cute sayings and was personalized with names and dates, I assumed her photographers had made it for her but she told me she had made it herself. Of course I had to know the how’s and why’s! Apparently she went to a website called Shutterfly and was able to do an entire layout page by page as well as add her own colors, sayings and tags! I had to check it out for myself and OMG!!!!!  I love this!! It’s great for super creatively impaired people like myself who wish we had the patience for scrapbooking but get fed up after 2 minutes of pasting and glitter! You can click and drag until your heart’s content creating a unique and personal book but you don’t actually have to do the hard part (putting it together). I love websites that let you pay someone else to creatively put together the things you can’t.  Shutterfly is easy to use and I recommend it for anyone looking to add a personal touch to their wedding pictures.  Check them out at

Carmen, I hope you get a chance to read this and thank you so much for the inspiration! I am already working on one for myself!
